Recording "Clumsy" at Eyeliktorock (A.K.A. Pechette Studios) Studios

Here's the project history. Back when Josh was looking to go to recording school, he decided to challange himself and record an Our Lady Peace tune, and a tricky one at that, as it has a multitude of difficult parts. Anyways, armed with his four track he went to work and shortly thereafter found out that he just did not have the proper gear to pull it off.

Fast foward to a few months back, Josh told me that he wanted to reopen the case, and he needed some help with the vocals. So, I dusted off my old vocal cords (haven't really sang a song in 2 years), and figured it'd be tons of fun and good practice.

So, we did it this weekend. Here are the credits:

Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Keyboard, Congas, Bass, Kazoo, Drums, Mixing & Editing: Josh
Vocals, Backup Vocals, Tambourine, Kazoo: Garry
Fender Strat Guitar lended by: Chris Leary
Sweet Bass lended by: Josh Brooks
Sweet VOX amp lended by: Ben Morgan

I didn't mention, but we have a new addition to the family. "Old Faithful", my old Olympus Camedia died on me a few months back. So, for Christmas, Jaime got me this sweet new Panasonic Digital camera. Way better, faster, and smaller. Welcome tot he family new camera!
Jaime herself, being awesome.
Putting new strings on the fender strat guitar.
Josh's Christmas tree
Josh's Christmas Tree with White Balance mode turned on. Wow, awesome!!!
Getting ready to lay down some trackage.
Pulling out the microphones.
We started with the drums. It's a hybrid drum kit, half are mine, half are Josh's, we used whatever soudned best for the parts we wanted.
Sticks & stuff.
The keyboard, pretty cheesy but worked great for the part.
The kick drum, we used a Shure beta 58 and a Sanheiser 451 (I think) on it.
Finishing mic placement.
Josh laying down some sweet drum tracks.
Yep.
Next came acoustic guitar. Notice the OLP pick? Josh got it from a show, so we hoped it would give us luck.
Which it did as a few takes later the acoustic guitars were finished.

Here are some of our tracks. Overall we used almost 100 of them!
Josh checkin' some stuff out.
But alas, we got hungry and went to the only place around...
Taco Bell! It's been a while since we've gone "South of the Border". It's appropriate studio food.
I was pretty happy despite my impending cold.
Chris and Ben stopped by to see how we were doing they offered a lot of help in getting the guitar sound dialed in correctly.
Josh tuning the strat.
I'm pretty excited at this point!
Chris checking out a few things.
Ben chillin'
Chris helping with some stuff.
And taunting me.
Layin'
Inside Josh's Crate amp.
What a mess we made!
I rocked the mic for a little while, laying down the vocal tracks.

It was rough going, Raine Maida is a tough act to follow!
But we had a great time!
We put a lot of mics on the guitar cab to get the optimal sound out of it.
My singing rig. I kept screwing up the words so I wrote them all down.
More Electric Guitarage
Ben being a sukka.
Chris being a Sukka too.
More micage on the guitar cab.
The kitchen was full of drums and stuff!
Studioing it up.
I got bored during the guitars so decided to do a little WOW to pass the time, and racked up 110K XP over about an hour.
The next morning, I was pretty smoked. This is me before I drank some red bull.
We started right off with the Bass tracks.
Josh doin' it up.
Then we moved on to the Keyboard. We also used this keyboard to put the conga drums in.
Yep
This is me after a red bull.
Next we moved on to the "fun stuff". There are a lot of kazoos in the song. We ran them through the guitar head and cabinet so they would get nice and distorted.
Kazooness.
A pile of cool junk.
The virtual mixer we used.
I layed on the Tambourine tracks.

And we're done! Boy, was I sad about being finished. Anyways, if you want to hear the song, HERE IT IS. Easiest way - Right click on the link and say "save target as" and put it where you want and listen away.

It was a real fun project. I think we got a good feel for the song. It's far from perfect but not bad for two guys and two days.

BTW - we named our band "OLPP" for "Other Lame Pechette Polmateer"
